After spending less than two weeks in Hillside, Lila became increasingly suspicious of Nurse Margaretâs behaviour. Throughout her stay, Nurse Margaret had been short-tempered with her, abrupt and forceful at times, even going so far as insisting the doctor give her shock treatments. In spite of all those things, that morning she was acting totally different. For the first time since Lila arrived at Hillside, Nurse Margaret was being pleasant to her. She smiled when she greeted her that morning and even offered her a clean frock and fresh linens for her bed. According to Gladys and Esther, this was unheard of, they only received a fresh frock on the fourteenth of the month and their beds were rarely changed. Lila later listened at her door as Nurse Margaret made her rounds. She could clearly hear her chastising April for wetting her bed again and screaming at another patient for getting in her way. Lila was extremely angry at her for the nasty comments she made to April and after she left the floor that morning, she went directly to her room.
As suspected, April was in bits and it took Lila several minutes to calm her down. Sadly, Pattyâs condition had not changed and she was still in the same position she had left her in. April did say that her eyes had opened a few times and that Doctor Asher had held her up and given her some medicine and a few sips of water. Lila asked, âHas she spoken or cried out in pain?â
April replied, âNot a word, but she did moan in her sleep last night.â
Lila sat by Pattyâs side, brushing the hair away from her face as she whispered, âDonât you worry now; l promise that you will be out of this place very soon.â
April asked Lila again if she really was going to help her as well as Patty. Lila confirmed that she would. She could not walk away from this young girl now and she knew that if her mother was alive that she would be doing the exact same thing. No one, not even the doctors, had done what they promised Aprilâs mother they would do. April was left in her bed day and night and only taken out for meals. This was not supposed to happen. Lila, albeit somewhat prematurely, had made April a promise and she knew that when she left Hillside that she would have to find alternate arrangements for her too. She was very intelligent and could easily function on her own with just a little help with her daily needs. April missed her mother terribly and had told Lila that she was worried about her. April had not received one letter or visit since her arrival and this was completely out of character.
Lila, who had no ties with April before Hillside, promised she would also speak to her mother once she was released. Her kindness and willingness to help anyone in need was in her very nature. She was so much like her own mother, Amelia, who would never have turned her back on anyone.
